The Hole in Wand York- Wizard Golf Review

‘The Hole in Wand’ is a 9-hole indoor mini golf course located in York, Engand. Due to open in 2020, ‘The Hole in the Wand York ’ was delayed due to England’s lockdowns and instead opened in May 2021. 

This attraction is operated by ‘The Potions Cauldron’, a company who produces magical themed beverages. ‘The Potions Cauldron’ have a shop located on York’s famous Shambles which is about a five minute walk from ‘The Hole in the Wand’. These delicious drinks are incorporated into ‘The Hole in Wand’, with a tavern attached for people playing the golf or those who aren’t. The tavern serves these bottled beverages, as well as speciality drinks, alcoholic beverages or ‘spiked potions’ and themed snacks. 

This mini golf course is highly themed, appearing to take great inspiration from Harry Potter’s Wizarding World.  As you begin your game, a member of staff will ask you to keep an eye out for the Gargoyle Grobblenook by searching for the hidden letters on each hole. 

The first hole is located on the bottom floor, right next to the Tavern and therefore shares a similar theme. Players must drop their ball into a stein located on a table placed over the first hole and then try to avoid this obstacle as they take their first hit. The second hole takes guests into ‘The Secret Store Room’, where this time the obstacles are crates of butterscotch beer. Following these first two holes, players then proceed upstairs, underneath the winged golf clubs, to continue their game. The third hole is located in a spilled cauldron and the fourth in an office like setting with flying books and an object that looks suspiciously like the pensive from Dumbledore’s office in Harry Potter. The next hole is designed to look like you are hitting the ball on a castle roof. Passing a few wizard portraits, you must go behind a curtain to reach the sixth hole. Shrouded in darkness, you must hit your ball across the uneven floor and onto what appears to be a fortune tellers table. Behind the next door is the shed, where players must hit their ball into a plant pot. The eighth hole is ‘The Champion’s portal’. On this hole is a bike, which players can peddle to create a windmill like obstacle for those they are playing against. Finally, upon the ninth hole you will successfully locate Grobblenook and finish the game. 

Once you have completed all nine holes, players can proceed back down stairs to receive their potion prize. Every player gets a potion, however what flavour you are given depends upon your score. But don’t worry, they’re all good!

We absolutely loved ‘The Hole in Wand’ and would definitely recommend you enjoy a game if your planning to visit York! Even if mini golf isn’t your thing, definitely pop into the tavern for some themed drinks and snacks. This is a must do for all fans of themed entertainment visiting York, but we especially recommend a visit for Harry Potter fans!
