Having achieved the parents dream of taking your kids to Magic Kingdom at an early age, I never would have expected that 20 years later our family would be fortunate enough to visit Walt Disney World, Disneyland and many other world class theme parks on a regular basis.
The only problem…I’m not a big fan of theme park rides, sorry! But my stomach just doesn’t agree with them!
There were times, I must admit that I must of seemed like the grumpy old man. I could rarely go on any rides without the risk of throwing up, and walking 20 miles in 95 degrees following my wife and kids from ride to ride, without taking part in the fun just didn’t quite cut it!
Don’t get me wrong, I could still appreciate the theme parks for different reasons- the friendly atmosphere, superb shows and organisation. However, more recently my eyes seemed to have been opened to another side…bars and restaurants!
I am no big drinker, as I normally do all the driving, but a mid day beer doesn’t half re-energise me. Especially in the summer temperatures. It even calms my nerves for the one disgusting ride I traditionally get forced on by the kids.
Universal, Six Flags and the Cedar Fair Parks are also included in this! Their previously unnoticed watering holes now help to break up the day with a cold beer and air con !
Please see below this ‘grumpy old man’s favourite watering holes that help him get through the long days round the parks:
1. Hollywood Studios– Tune-in Lounge – This must be Hollywood Studios best kept secret, with brilliant theming and friendly bar staff, this is a real hidden oasis. (Don’t get me wrong, I’m not overlooking the recently opened Bass line TapHouse, this is just an old favourite)
2. Universal Studios Orlando– Finnigans- The staff are great and the bar food is delicious.
3. Magic Kingdom– ‘Be Our Guest ‘- This is a great addition, but don’t forget to book in advance as it is a popular choice!
4. Six Flags Magic Mountain– Sports Bar – Sport, beer and air con kind of beats climbing the hills of Magic Mountain in 100 degrees outside in my opinion.
5. Epcot– Ok, so this is a bit of a seasonal one, but me and my family are all big fans of the Food & Wine festival (other food festivals are available-of which there are plenty these days). I make sure to plan a no driving day for this one!
6. Animal Kingdom– Yak & Yeti-Both the bar and restaurant are wonderful with great theming.
7. Cedar Point -Famous Dave’s- Just outside and on the lake, near the marina as you exit the park by Valravn. Great food and the best BBQ sauce!
8. City Walk Universal Orlando and Hollywood– Margaritaville ( Its 5 o’clock somewhere! )
9. Disney’s California Adventure– Mendocino Terrace- A great place to rest your feet, have a glass of wine and eat some cheese and biscuits. Optional- but a loaf of boudin bread, or even just a free sample from the bakery tour can really help step this up a level. And don’t forget the view of Cars land, what could be better?
10. Disneyland Paris– This one deserves a special mention, Cafe Fantasia in the Disneyland hotel. Although on the posher side, this is an excellent stop off (usually to get out of the cold when we visit). Always great service and a very friendly atmosphere.
All in all, these are a bunch of pit stops I am eternally grateful for. They have helped me learn to pace myself and truly enjoy the theme parks for different reasons to the average fan. I have truly grown more content as a result of places like these allowing me to enjoy watching the rest of my family enjoy the traditional pursuits that unfortunately pass me by.
